Children's Aid Chorus Composition Grant - 2007

The Children's Aid Chorus has recently completed its Eighth Annual "Songs of the City" composition contest for 2007. Two winners were selected. Neal Kirkwood was chosen to write a piece for the Children's Aid Junior Chorus. Our other winner, Jacob Groff, composed a new composition for the Senior Chorus. Both works were premiered at our Spring Concert on May 16, 2008 at the NY Society for Ethical Culture located at 2 West 64th Street.

We look forward to this year's contest. Our guidelines have changed slightly for this year's competition. Please read through them carefully. Much thanks to all of the talented applicants.

Here are this year's guidelines:

Children's Aid Chorus Original Composition Grants (Middle & High School) 2008

The Children's Aid Chorus is calling for applicants to its Ninth Annual "Songs of The City" Composition Grant 2008-2009. During the fall of 2008, a New York City or metropolitan area composer will be selected to write a 3-5 minute choral piece for The Children's Aid High School Chorus (Grant A). The composer will receive $1500 for the commission and performance of a new choral composition to be premiered at The Children's Aid Society Twelfth Annual Spring Concert in May 2009.
In addition, the Children’s Aid Chorus is calling for scores of middle school choral pieces. This grant (B) is open to all composers currently residing in the United States. This composer will receive $1000 for the composition. This piece will also be premiered at The Children's Aid Society’s Spring Concert in May 2009. Composers are welcome to apply for both grants. Application Procedure for Grant A (High School category)

Please submit the following:

1. Cover letter (please include address, phone number, email address and indicate that you are applying for Grant A – High School Category)
2. Only New York City or metropolitan area composers will be considered for Grant A
3. Two copies of two contrasting pieces demonstrating competent writing for voices. (Please note: the committee can only listen to a maximum of three minutes of each selection.
4. Only original compositions will be accepted.
5. One audio copy of a high quality tape or CD of the submitted pieces. Please cue all tapes and mark CDs clearly. Due date will be August 15th, 2008.
6. Applicants will be informed of the Selection Committee's decision by October 31, 2008.
7. Please note that no materials will be returned unless a self-addressed stamped envelope is included within the materials.
8. Previous applicants are welcome to apply. Please submit recent work.

Application Procedure for Grant B (Middle School category)
Please submit the following:

1. Cover letter (please include address, phone number, email address and indicate that you are applying for Grant B – Middle School Category).
2. All composers residing in the United States are welcome to apply for Grant B.
3. Two copies of up to two pieces, 2-3 part treble voices.
4. Only original compositions will be accepted.
5. Duration is to be under four minutes
6. Composer must submit proof of copyright permission for use of chosen text. A text that thoughtfully considers the lives of children is highly encouraged. One audio copy of a high quality tape or CD of the submitted pieces is preferred. Please cue all tapes and mark CDs clearly.
7. Submitted pieces must be unpublished and not previously performed in the United States
8. Due date will be August 31st, 2008. Applicants will be informed of the Selection Committee’s decision by November 30, 2008.
9. Please note that no materials will be returned unless a self-addressed stamped envelope is included within the materials.
