History and Program
The Mirabal Sisters Campus opened in 1994 as I.S. 90 in collaboration with The Children’s Aid Society and in 2004 it was divided into 3 schools.
Children's Aid provides the following services and programs to all: After School, Saturday, Holiday and Summer program; school-based Medical, Dental, Mental Health and Preventive Services; Emergency Relief through the New York Times Neediest Fund; Children's Aid/Carrera Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program; Recycle a Bicycle; Parent, Family and Community Engagement and Development opportunities (such as Family Resource Room, Vocational and Educational trainings, Adult Education, Advocacy and Leadership opportunities.)
The school is named after Patria, Minerva and Maria Teresa Mirabal, three sisters from the Dominican Republic who opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo; they were repeatedly persecuted and jailed before their brutal assassination on November 25, 1960. Their sacrifice prompted Trujillo’s own assassination on May 30, 1961 and the fall of the regime.
