Coalition on Working with Abusive Partners

The Children’s Aid Society’s Family Wellness Program convened CoWAP along with our partners from CONNECT with the goal of finding effective ways to intervene with people who abuse in intimate relationships.
CoWAP is comprised of New York City organizations committed to ending domestic violence and abuse, including: The Children’s Aid Society, CONNECT, The Bronx Defenders, The Center for the Study of Family Abuse, Men Can Stop Rape, Voices of Women Organizing Project, Cardozo Advocates for Battered Women, Safe Horizon, Project Permanence, LLC, STEPS to End Family Violence and the UJA Federation of New York City.
Members of the Coalition on Working with Abusive Partners (CoWAP) recognize that no one response to abusive behavior can be effective in our goal of eliminating domestic violence. While accountability through the criminal justice system is critical, there is a need for a range of additional strategies for intervening with abusive partners. Our goals are to find effective ways to address the complex factors contributing to abusive behavior, and to encourage and support behavior change while simultaneously holding abusive partners accountable. We believe it is in the interest of victims of domestic violence, and their children, to commit energy and resources to doing so.
