HOPE Leadership Academy Summer Institute
During the Summer Institute, a select cohort of 40-44 young people (ages 14 to 18) follow an intensive curriculum that gives them the skills to eventually become peer trainers. Using a peer-to-peer model in group workshops, youth address difficult issues that they encounter in their lives and neighborhoods; including family and relationship violence, gang violence, school violence, police violence, racism and discrimination, substance abuse and more. They then learn sophisticated strategies for conflict resolution, anger management, violence prevention and victim assistance.
In addition to developing their training skills, young people participate in enrichment components that are designed to enhance their professional skills and provide practical learning experiences. Youth demonstrate their mastery of concepts by way of culminating activities for all subject topics, and through their attendance at a recognition ceremony during the last week of the Summer Institute.
