Youth involved with the juvenile justice system have unique educational needs. To meet those needs, The Children’s Aid Society’s GED and Re-Entry/Transitional School Program uses New York City Department of Education teachers to provide literacy and GED preparation to youth ages 14-18.
GED and literacy programs help youth focus their priorities after stays at juvenile justice facilities.
The majority of participants are referred to the program from Children’s Aid’s Community Re-entry Program, which assists youth as they transition from juvenile justice facilities back to their neighborhoods and families.
The GED and Re-Entry/Transitional School Program is conducted in partnership with the New York State Office of Children’s and Family Services (OCFS) and the New York City Department of Education (DOE). It is conducted by Career Education Center under the auspices of the DOE Alternative Schools and Programs at Children’s Aid’s Dunlevy Milbank Center.
