City Council OKs Permits for Green Carts after Key Rally

The push for healthful eating has gotten an important boost from the New York City Council. The Council voted on February 27th to create 1,000 permits for street vendors to set up green carts in low-income neighborhoods to sell fresh fruits and vegetables.

Children’s Aid participated in a key rally on the steps of City Hall earlier in the week to show support for the proposal. CEO C. Warren Moses spoke about the need for more fresh produce in neighborhoods the agency serves, where residents have higher rates of obesity and diabetes. Children’s Aid parents also spoke eloquently about their need for more fresh fruits and vegetables for their families.
