What:
At 6:00 pm, Manhattan Borough President Scott M. Stringer will speak to the crowd and sign free copies of his book, Go Green East Harlem Cookbook. The Cookbook is a compilation of healthy recipes contributed by East Harlem restaurants and residents, including representatives of Children’s Aid’s East Harlem Center. The Cookbook is part of the Borough President’s Go Green East Harlem health initiative which includes a new $3.4 million Asthma Center of Excellence opening in 2008, the planting of hundreds of street trees in uptown Manhattan, the opening of new Green Markets, and a “green building” conference for developers, planners and community advocates that Stringer hosted in October, among other projects. Go Green East Harlem is led by a steering committee of neighborhood residents, civic, environmental and business leaders, public health advocates and elected officials.

Health issues – especially asthma and obesity – and access to health insurance are of great concern to members of the East Harlem community, who will receive important health and wellness information at The Children's Aid Society’s East Harlem Center’s Spring Health Fair.

Children’s Aid and other local organizations will offer asthma education, adolescent and family health information, yoga routines and healthy cooking demonstrations and recipes. Attendees will also have the opportunity to sign up for free or low-cost public health insurance through Children’s Aid’s Health Care Access Program.

The Children’s Aid Society and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America have partnered for the Latino Outreach Initiative, designed to attract additional Latino youth and their families to local Clubs in order to assist them with a wide range of issues and events, including the Health Fair.

Boys & Girls Clubs of America (www.bgca.org) comprises a national network of more than 4,000 neighborhood-based facilities, with 4.8 million youth served through Club membership and community outreach, in all 50 states and on U.S. Military bases worldwide. Known as “The Positive Place for Kids,” the Clubs provide guidance-oriented character development programs on a daily basis for children 6-18 years old, conducted by a full-time professional staff.
