Harlem Renaissance Extravaganza

School-aged children and teens will perform in the Harlem Renaissance Extravaganza, featuring a look at “Harlem, Then and Now.”

The performances mark the culmination of the first year of the Harlem Renaissance Arts Program, which teaches youth at The Children’s Aid Society’s East Harlem Center about Harlem’s culture and arts through research, performances and visits to significant sites.

Thanks to the generosity of Lehman Brothers, the youth will perform on a newly renovated stage. Lehman Brothers also sponsors the Harlem Renaissance Arts Program at the East Harlem Center.

Students from across the country are invited to submit projects – prose, poetry, photography, collage or drawing – depicting their dreams. Winners are chosen in various age categories.

Fatoumata Jawo, a 15-year-old student from the Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics, a Children’s Aid Society Community School, will be awarded a $5,000 scholarship. Fatoumata’s dream is to become a dermatologist.

Two other winners will be awarded personal computers with educational software and four will win bundles of educational software.

The Children’s Aid Society was founded in 1853. It is one of the nation’s largest and most innovative non-sectarian agencies, serving more than 150,000 of New York’s neediest children and their families with a network of services that includes community schools, neighborhood centers, camps, adoption and foster care services, teen pregnancy prevention, education, health and recreation.
