What:
Elementary school children and parents who have been studying nutrition and cooking will host a youth green market in partnership with the Council on the Environment of New York City. The market will offer fresh fruits and vegetables, cooking demonstrations and recipe handouts.
Approximately two dozen elementary school students and parents who have been taking classes on nutrition and healthy cooking will share the fun and delicious eating tips they have learned at a youth green market at their school in East Harlem. For the past three months, students have been learning about nutrition through the preparation and sampling of healthy foods. Before this class, some students hadn’t been exposed to some of these vital foods. In their classes, parents have been learning about nutrition, cooking and ways to incorporate healthy eating into their families’ diets. Both groups have taken special trips to supermarkets and farmers markets to learn how to identify and shop for healthy foods.
The Children's Aid Society and Council on the Environment of New York City hope that by presenting this green market in a school, many East Harlem children and families will try fresh produce and reap the health benefits of these “new” foods. Parents and students will also offer cooking demonstrations, nutrition advice and recipes that families can try at home.
