Youth Development
Youth Development Services (YDS) is a division of The Children’s Aid Society (CAS) that offers programs for youth within CAS community centers and community schools. The YDS model incorporates recreation and academics through services that include mentoring, college prep, entrepreneurial programs and leadership teams.
The goal of YDS is to instill the drive and motivation for each participant to move on to further education after high school. Through practical education, solid career preparation, scholarship assistance and ongoing adult support, Youth Development Services provides a continuum of support for children and youth through their teen years.
Instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, teamwork and belonging is key to every aspect of YDS. Students display athletic ability and develop teamwork skills in Sports and Recreation programs. Education and Career Readiness programs provide financial aid, SAT/PSAT prep and scholarship application workshops, as well as entrepreneurship training. Youth are encouraged to explore their hidden talents through movement in Dance programs. Leadership Training and Mentoring programs are also available for participating students.
The Children's Aid Society also has Juvenile Justice Programs like the Community Re-Entry program, which provides wraparound and educational enrichment services for adjudicated youth returning home. Children’s Aid also focuses on preventative programs like the Youth Violence Intervention and Prevention program, which takes an interactive, group approach to teen violence prevention by giving participants a forum to discuss the root causes of violence.
This comprehensive series of cutting-edge programs, services and activities enhance the personal development of young people so they can compete and succeed in the larger community. The Children’s Aid Society gives adolescents the foundation they need to move one step closer to a successful future.
The Children’s Aid Society was founded in 1853. It is one of the nation’s largest and most innovative non-sectarian agencies, serving over 150,000 of New York’s neediest children and their families with a network of services that includes community schools, neighborhood centers, camps, adoption and foster care services, teen pregnancy prevention, education, health and recreation.
