History
Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom High School was one of the first small high schools in the Bronx. High expectations and support for all students are emphasized. The curriculum focuses on developing the research, problem solving and communication skills expected of those pursuing a post-secondary education. Portfolio requirements emphasize writing and critical thinking. All students are assigned to advisors who help guide them through their academic requirements.
Both schools are named after Fannie Lou Hamer, who was a leader during the 1960s Civil Rights Movement. She was a member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and helped establish the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, which challenged the seating of a segregated Mississippi delegation at the 1964 Democratic Convention. She was arrested several times and subjected to physical abuse for her work on voter registration.
Until the very end of her life, Mrs. Hamer remained an active advocate for people’s rights. After a long illness and fight with breast cancer, Mrs. Hamer died on March 14, 1977.
