UKARE

Mission
The mission of Uptown Kids Are Reading Everyday (UKARE) is to provide a safe and caring environment where mentors and mentees can explore the world of literacy and discover a love of reading together.

Goals of the UKARE Program

  • Foster a love of reading.
  • Encourage effective communication, including written, oral, presentations and negotiations.
  • Improve academics through reading.
  • Increase creativity through literacy activities and projects.

Who are the Mentees?

UKARE youth are sixth to eighth graders in Washington Heights. Targeted youth include those who are reading below their grade level and for whom English is primarily a second language.

Who are the Mentors?

Mentors should possess enthusiasm and passion for reading, literature and, most importantly, for youth. Males and females are welcome. Mentors must be over 21. Bilingual-Spanish candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. Mentors must have patience and the ability and aptitude to work with youth. A basic knowledge of reading strategies (plot, main ideas, setting, etc.) is helpful.

Volunteer’s Role

As a mentor, you'll work with one or two children to instill a love of reading while improving literacy skills. Mentors are to model reading and facilitate activities with their mentees. Records of daily activities, vocabulary acquired and books read are required. All mentoring sessions take place on-site and are combined with monthly field trips.

Time Commitment

Meetings occur the first three Saturdays of the month. Model reading day hours are from 10 a.m. to noon. Field trips take place Saturdays 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
