On the eve of the shutdown of the federal government over a budget impasse, WPIX reporter James Ford decided to explore what this action means for working families who count on government-funded early childhood programs.

He visited the Drew Hamilton Center in West Harlem, which offers high-quality daycare and Head Start programs for preschoolers. There, he spoke to Children’s Aid’s Andy Seltzer about the impact of the shutdown on parents who count on these programs. He also interviewed Katimi Bouare, a single mother of four whose children have all participated in programming at Drew.
